How to get musty, garage smell out of fabric?

I am planning on a sewing project, I found some really useful yards of fabric in the garage. It does not have a putrid garbage smell, just a musty garage smell or basement smell. I can't wash the fabric before sewing cause it will fray. I am wondering if there is any way to liven up or freshen the scent, get rid of that basement smell safely without ruining the fabric, febreeze doesn't really replace the smell, it just adds a scent to it but still smells musty...
