Can someone who does not practise meditation experience the Pranava mantra and anahat nada?

I had an experience while visiting an old Shiva temple in central India. I have dabbled in meditation, purely to deal with work related stress, without any guidance. The scheme of events was such that I knew what it was that I heard. but the state of mind it left me in was the biggest proof of what I experienced -- utter, total chill. But why me? I am not a Yogi or a particularly pure-minded person. The second time I went to that temple, I felt a warm darkness enveloping me, but it was non-threatening, like a warm cosy darkness, may be like what a child feels in his mother's womb.
